The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the 2025-26 - ATKT 75/25 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

(1)'May it please your honor, I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty' Who is the speaker and what is the offence of accused?[2]

Answer

The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The speaker is Susan B. Anthony, the American campaigner for women's rights, answering Judge Ward Hunt after he fined her. She was charged with knowingly voting without a lawful right to vote, at the Congressional election in Rochester, New York, on 5 November 1872.

Where the line comes from. These are her words at sentence in United States v. Susan B. Anthony, tried at Canandaigua, New York, on 17 and 18 June 1873. She was prosecuted under section 19 of an Act of Congress of 31 May 1870. Her only "crime" was that she was a woman, because the law then let only men vote. Judge Hunt directed the jury to find her guilty and fined her one hundred dollars and the costs of the prosecution.

Why the line matters. She went straight on to attack "your man-made, unjust, unconstitutional forms of law", which "tax, fine, imprison and hang women" but deny them representation. The judge did not order her to be held until the fine was paid, so she was never jailed, and she never paid. Her refusal turned a conviction into a protest that is still quoted.
