How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Q.1) A) Answer in two sentences only
any 4 of 6 · 8 Marks
Answer
The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The speaker is Cleaver, counsel for the prosecution, cross-examining William Falder at his trial in Act II of John Galsworthy's play Justice. The "nine pounds" are the true sum of Walter How's cheque: Falder cashed it for ninety and returned nine to the office that afternoon.
Where the line comes from. Falder's defence is temporary insanity: he says he does not remember altering the cheque. Cleaver asks whether he was well enough to go back to work that afternoon. Falder answers, "Yes, I had to take the money back." Cleaver pounces on the answer, puts this question, and sits down.
Why the line matters. It is the neatest blow of the cross-examination. A man who remembered to return the right sum, nine pounds and not ninety, was clearly thinking about the cheque. So his claim that his mind was blank at the moment of the forgery is hard to believe. The line helps the jury reject the plea of insanity.
