munotes.in is an independent study resource for students of the University of Mumbai. It is not affiliated with the University of Mumbai, and is not endorsed by it.

The University does not publish an official answer key for this paper. The answers in this volume are model answers, written to show how a full-mark answer is built. They are a study aid, not an authority on what an examiner marked.

The question paper reproduced here is the paper as set by the University of Mumbai at the Mar 2025 examination.

The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the Mar 2025 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

Duration 2½ hours  ·  Total marks 75  ·  24 questions answered

Instructions printed on the paper

  • N.B. (1) All questions are compulsory. (2) Figures to the right indicate marks. (3) Illustrations, in-depth answers and diagrams will be appreciated. (4) Mixing of sub-questions is not allowed.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

(a)Give brief explanation about foundation of AI.[5]

Answer

For full marks, cover: the idea that AI draws on many older disciplines, and for each of the eight foundations the question it asked and what it gave AI, with a key name or idea for each.

AI stands on older sciences

AI is a young field, but its ideas come from several older disciplines. Russell and Norvig name eight foundations. Each asked a question that AI needed answered.

  1. Philosophy. Can formal rules be used to draw valid conclusions? How does the mind arise from the brain, and how does knowledge lead to action? Aristotle's syllogisms were the first rules of correct reasoning. Philosophy also gave AI the idea of rational action: act to achieve goals.
  2. Mathematics. What are the formal rules, what can be computed, and how do we reason with uncertain information? It gave logic (Boole, Frege), the theory of algorithms and computability (Turing), intractability (NP-completeness) and probability (Bayes).
munotes.in 2
  1. Economics. How should we make decisions to maximise payoff? It gave decision theory, utility, and game theory (von Neumann and Morgenstern) for decisions among several agents.
  2. Neuroscience. How does the brain process information? It showed that the brain is a network of about 10^11 neurons, which inspired artificial neural networks.
  3. Psychology. How do humans and animals think and act? Cognitive psychology views the brain as an information-processing device with internal representations.
  4. Computer engineering. How can we build an efficient computer? AI needs a machine to run on, and ever faster hardware made modern AI possible.
  5. Control theory and cybernetics. How can artefacts operate under their own control? Norbert Wiener's feedback systems, which minimise an error signal over time, are close to an agent maximising its performance.
  6. Linguistics. How does language relate to thought? Chomsky's work on grammar led to natural language processing.

Conclusion. AI rests on eight foundations: philosophy, mathematics, economics, neuroscience, psychology, computer engineering, control theory and linguistics. Together they give it reasoning, computation, decision making under uncertainty, models of the brain and mind, machines to run on, feedback control and language.
