The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the Nov 2019 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

Duration 3 hours  ·  Total marks 100  ·  25 questions answered

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

SECTION I

Answer the following, not more than two sentences

munotes.in 1

1.State four causes of Noise Pollution.[2]

Answer

Noise pollution is unwanted or excessive sound that harms health or disturbs ordinary life. Its main causes are these. Any four, briefly explained, will answer the question.

  1. Road traffic. Engines, exhausts and especially horns of vehicles are the most widespread source in cities.
  2. Industrial machinery. Factories, mills, generators and heavy machines produce continuous high noise. That is why industrial areas have the highest limits.
  3. Construction activity. Pile drivers, concrete mixers, drills and earth movers are very loud. They are often used close to homes.
  4. Loudspeakers and public address systems. These are used at religious, social and political gatherings, weddings and processions.
  5. Fire crackers. Bursting sound-emitting crackers at festivals and celebrations causes sudden, intense noise.
  6. Aircraft and railways. Airports and railway lines expose nearby residents to repeated loud noise.
  7. Household and commercial sources. Loud music systems, diesel generators and shop amplifiers add to the background noise.

How the law responds. The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 target these sources directly.

  1. Rule 5. Loudspeakers need written permission and may not be used at night, except in closed premises or during an emergency.
  2. Rule 5A. Horns are not to be used in silence zones, or at night in residential areas. Sound-emitting crackers and construction equipment are restricted at night.
  3. Rule 3(3). The State Government must take measures against noise from vehicles, horns, crackers and loudspeakers.

Four to write. Vehicles and horns, industrial machinery, construction equipment, and loudspeakers.
