How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Q. No. 1 Answer in two sentences
any 6 of 8 · 12 Marks
Answer
The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The fallacy of undistributed middle is committed when the middle term is not distributed in either premise. It breaks the rule that the middle term must be distributed at least once: "All advocates are graduates; all judges are graduates; so all judges are advocates."
Why the example fails. "Graduates" is the predicate of two affirmative propositions, so it is undistributed in both. Advocates may be one part of the class of graduates and judges another. The premises are as consistent with no judge being an advocate as with every judge being one.
Why the rule exists. The middle term is the bridge between the other two terms. If neither premise speaks of the whole of the middle class, each may be speaking of a different part of it. Then the two end terms are never compared with the same thing.
Once is enough. If one premise speaks of every member of the middle class, whatever part the other premise speaks of is certainly included.
