How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Q.1 A): Answer any four of the following in two sentences only, any 4 of 6
8 Marks - 2 marks each
Answer
The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The speaker is William Falder, the young clerk on trial for forgery, speaking to the jury from the witness-box. The lines are from John Galsworthy's play Justice (1910), Act II, the trial at the Assizes.
Where the lines come from. Falder's counsel, Hector Frome, asks him to tell the jury what happened on the morning of Friday, July the 7th. Falder describes how Ruth Honeywill came to him after her husband attacked her. There were "the marks of his fingers round her throat", and her arm was bruised. Later that morning, he says, the idea of altering the cheque "just flashed across me".
Why the lines matter. They are the evidence for Frome's plea of temporary insanity. The shock of seeing Ruth hurt, Frome argues, left Falder not responsible for his act. They also show why he forged the cheque, to get the money to take her away.
