1.Latent and manifest function[2]
Answer
The distinction is Robert K. Merton's, drawn to separate what an institution is meant to do from what it actually does.
Manifest functions are consequences that are intended and recognised by the participants. The manifest function of a school is to impart knowledge; of a court, to determine guilt; of a rain dance, to bring rain.
Latent functions are consequences that are unintended and unrecognised. The latent functions of a school include supervising children while parents work, forming friendship and marriage networks, and delaying entry to the labour market. Merton's own example is the Hopi rain dance, whose latent function is to reinforce group solidarity whether or not rain follows.
Merton added dysfunctions, consequences that damage the system.
