1.Latent and manifest functions.[2]
Answer
The distinction is Robert K. Merton's.
Manifest functions are the consequences of a social practice that are intended and recognised by the participants. The manifest function of a school is to teach; of a court, to decide guilt; of a rain dance, to bring rain.
Latent functions are consequences that are unintended and unrecognised. The latent functions of a school include supervising children while parents work, forming friendship and marriage networks, and delaying entry to the labour market. Merton's example is the Hopi rain dance, whose latent function is to reinforce group solidarity whether or not rain follows.
Merton added dysfunctions, consequences that damage the system.
