1.Criminology and penology[2]
Answer
Criminology is the scientific study of crime as a social phenomenon: what counts as crime, how much of it there is, who commits it and why. It studies the causes of criminal behaviour, the making of criminal law, and the reaction of society to the offender. Edwin Sutherland defined it as the body of knowledge regarding crime as a social phenomenon, covering the processes of making laws, breaking laws, and reacting towards the breaking of laws.
Penology, from the Latin poena meaning punishment, is the branch of criminology that studies what is done to the offender after conviction: the aims and justification of punishment, sentencing, prisons, probation, parole and reformation.
The difference in one line: criminology asks why the crime happened, penology asks what should now be done about it.
