Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) Operations Research Syllabus - Mumbai University

Syllabus for Operations Research

Vocational skill course · Semester 5 · TY BCOM · 2 credits · 50 marks

Module I: Linear Programming Problems (LPP) (15) Unit I Introduction to OR: (3 lectures)

  • Definitions and Scopes of OR, Applications of OR in various field,
  • Characteristics and Limitations of OR.
  • Unit II Linear Programming Problem:
  • LPP formulations: (3 lectures) Maximization & Minimization. Concepts of Solution, Feasible Solution, Basic Feasible Solution, Optimal solution.
  • Graphical method: (3 lectures) Graphical Solution for problems with two variables.
  • Simplex method: (6 lectures) Simplex method of solving problems with two or more variables (only Maximization problems). Concepts of Slack, Surplus and artificial variable, Shadow Price of resources, scarce and abundant resources.

Module II: Assignment and Transportation Problems (15) Unit I Assignment Problems (7 lectures)

  • Concept. Mathematical Formulation as LPP, Solution by: Complete Enumeration Method and Hungarian method. Maximization and Minimization Problems, Balanced and Unbalanced Problems.
  • Prohibited assignment problem. Alternative solutions in Assignment problem. (Maximum of 5x5 matrix. Up to two iterations after row and column minimization) Unit II Transportation Problems (8 Lectures):
  • Concept, Mathematical Formulation. Concepts of Solution, Feasible Solution. Initial Basic Feasible Solution by North West Corner Rule, Least Cost Method, Vogel’s Approximation Method.
  • Optimal Solution by MODI Method. Optimality test, Improvement procedure. (Degeneracy concept to be covered only at conceptual level. Not to be included in numerical Problems)
