How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer

For full marks, cover: any fifteen of the seventeen items, each with the correct form and, where useful, the one-line rule behind it. All seventeen are answered below.

ItemAnswerThe rule
(a)He left for London yesterday."Yesterday" marks a finished past action: simple past of "leave".
(b)She goes for a walk every day.A daily habit: simple present, with "-es" for "she".
(c)Ganga is the longest river in India.A superlative takes "the".
(d)I must help her get the files.Particular files that both speakers know about: definite article.
(e)We will go to a vegetarian restaurant.Any one restaurant, not yet named; "vegetarian" begins with a consonant sound: "a".
(f)I have a favour to ask of you.One asks a favour "of" a person.
munotes.in 3
ItemAnswerThe rule
(g)One must not use mobile phones in the courtroom."Must not" expresses a rule or obligation ("should not" is also accepted).
(h)She might not attend the meeting; she has fallen sick."Might" or "may" expresses possibility.
(i)What do you enjoy watching? The underlined word, "anime", is the thing enjoyed, so the question asks "what".
(j)Did it snow last night?Yes/no question in the simple past: "did" + subject + base verb.
(k)I was unwell, so I went to the hospital.A compound sentence joins two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction ("so").
(l)She passed because she practised.A complex sentence has a main clause and a subordinate clause ("because she practised").
munotes.in 4
ItemAnswerThe rule
(m)A dress was bought by them.Passive: object becomes subject; "was" + past participle; "by" + agent.
(n)Sarvesh sent the letter.Active: the agent becomes the subject, and the verb takes the past tense.
(o)The waiter said that there was no cheesecake.Reported statement: "is" becomes "was"; quotation marks removed; "that" added.
(p)Vedant asked me whether I had watched the latest episode of Friends.A yes/no question is reported with "whether" or "if"; simple past becomes past perfect; statement word order.
(q)No sooner had I reached the station than the train left."No sooner" takes the past perfect with inverted word order, followed by "than".

The grammar behind the answers

munotes.in 5
  1. Tenses. The simple past ("left") is used for a finished action at a stated past time. The simple present ("goes") is used for habits.
  2. Articles. "The" is used with superlatives and with things already known. "A" is used with one thing not yet named, before a consonant sound.
  3. Prepositions. Some verbs and nouns take fixed prepositions: one asks a favour "of" someone.
  4. Modals. "Must" shows obligation; "may" and "might" show possibility.
  5. Questions. Wh-questions ask for information ("what"). Yes/no questions begin with an auxiliary ("did").
  6. Sentence types. A compound sentence joins equal clauses with "and", "but" or "so". A complex sentence adds a dependent clause with "because", "when" or "although".
  7. Voice. In the passive, the object becomes the subject, and the doer follows "by".
  8. Reported speech. Tenses move one step back, quotation marks go, and questions take statement order.
  9. "No sooner ... than". It takes the past perfect with inversion: "No sooner had I...".
munotes.in 6

Conclusion. Each answer applies a basic rule of English grammar: tense, article, preposition, modal, question form, sentence type, voice, reported speech or inversion. Knowing the rule, not just the answer, helps in any variation of these questions.
