The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the Oct 2025 examination, reproduced as Savitribai Phule Pune University set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

Duration 3 hours  ·  Total marks 70  ·  10 questions answered

Instructions printed on the paper

  • N.B. (1) All questions are compulsory. (2) Figures to the right indicate full marks.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer

For full marks, cover: any fifteen of the eighteen items, each with the correct form and, where useful, the one-line rule behind it. All eighteen are answered below.

ItemAnswerThe rule
(a)We played football at the stadium yesterday."Yesterday" marks a finished past action: simple past.
(b)They are attending the band practice regularly these days."Are" + verb-ing: present continuous for an ongoing habit "these days".
(c)Gold is a noble metal."Metal" here is a countable noun used to classify gold: indefinite article.
(d)I watched a movie yesterday.A movie not named before: indefinite article.
(e)They were looking for you all day."Look for" means search.
(f)The files are on the table."On" for something resting on a surface.

ItemAnswerThe rule
(g)You must pay your taxes as a citizen."Must" expresses duty or obligation ("should" or "ought to" are also accepted).
(h)Would you like to go for a movie tomorrow?"Would you like" is the polite form of inquiry or invitation.
(i)Which Marathi movie was a hit in Maharashtra? The underlined part, 'Dashavtar', names the movie, so the question asks "which".
(j)Does she speak French?Yes/no question in the simple present: "does" + subject + base verb.
(k)In spite of being injured, she finished the race.A simple sentence has one finite verb; the clause "even though she was injured" becomes a phrase.
(l)He studied music, and she worked at a music academy.A compound sentence joins two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction.
munotes.in 4
ItemAnswerThe rule
(m)'Showers of Blessings' was sung by the choir.Passive: object becomes subject; "was" + past participle; "by" + agent.
(n)Vaishnavi spilt the tea.Active: the agent becomes the subject. (The paper prints "split"; the verb meant is "spill".)
(o)Joe asked when I would be back.Indirect question: reporting verb in the past, "will" becomes "would", statement word order, no question mark.
(p)She said that she was going home.Reported statement: "I am going" becomes "she was going".
munotes.in 5
ItemAnswerThe rule
(q)He is too outgoing not to make friends."So ... that" with a positive result becomes "too ... not to".
(r)No sooner do they finish a project than they move on to the next."No sooner" takes inverted word order ("do they finish") and is followed by "than".

Notes on the trickier items

  1. Articles (c) and (d). Use "a" before a consonant sound and "an" before a vowel sound. "The" is used for something already known or unique. Neither blank refers to anything specific, so "a" is right in both.
  2. Modals (g) and (h). Modals of duty are "must", "should" and "ought to". "Must" is the strongest. "Would" in (h) makes a polite request or invitation.
  3. Simple and compound sentences (k) and (l). A simple sentence has one main clause. A compound sentence has two or more main clauses joined by "and", "but", "or" or "so". A complex sentence has a main clause and a dependent clause, as the original sentence in (k) does.
munotes.in 6
  1. Voice (m) and (n). In the passive voice the receiver of the action becomes the subject. In the active voice the doer is the subject. The tense stays the same.
  2. Reported speech (o) and (p). When the reporting verb is in the past, the tense shifts back one step: "am going" becomes "was going", and "will" becomes "would". Pronouns change to suit the speaker.
  3. "Too" and "no sooner" (q) and (r). "Too" has a negative sense ("too tired to walk"), so a positive result needs "not to". "No sooner" at the start of a sentence needs inversion and is always paired with "than", never "when" or "then".

Conclusion. Each answer applies one rule of grammar: tense and verb form, articles, prepositions, modals, question forms, sentence types, voice, reported speech and transformation. Any fifteen correct answers earn the full fifteen marks.
