The Paper as Set

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

1.What is meant by Westernization?[2]

Answer

Westernisation is the term M.N. Srinivas gave to the changes brought about in Indian society and culture by over a hundred and fifty years of British rule, covering changes at every level, in technology, institutions, ideology and values.

It is not sanskritisation, which Srinivas defined in the same work as the process by which a lower caste takes over the customs, ritual and way of life of a higher caste to raise its position. Sanskritisation moves a group up inside the existing order; westernisation changes the order itself.

What it changed, in family law. English education after Macaulay's Minute of 1835 produced the class from which the reformers came. A uniform criminal law and a uniform law of contract and property were introduced across religions, leaving only the family to personal law, which is the gap Article 44 addresses. Salaried employment broke the joint household into nuclear units. And women gained education, employment, property and the right to divorce.

The legislation is the measurable part. The Bengal Sati Regulation, 1829; the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856; the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929; then the Hindu Code Bills, which gave monogamy by section 5(i), divorce by section 13, the daughter as an heir by the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, and absolute ownership for a woman by its section 14.

Srinivas said westernisation is ethically neutral, a description and not a judgment, and the standard criticism is that it credits to the British changes Indian reformers fought for, Raja Ram Mohan Roy on sati and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on widow remarriage being the obvious examples.
