The Paper as Set

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

1.Which Act transferred Government of India from the East India Company to the British Crown?[2]

Answer

The Government of India Act, 1858 transferred the government of India from the East India Company to the British Crown. It is also called the Act for the Better Government of India.

Why it was passed. The revolt of 1857 showed that a trading company could no longer rule a large country. Parliament ended the Company's rule.

What it did.

  1. The territories, revenues and armed forces of the Company passed to the Crown.
  2. The Court of Directors and the Board of Control were abolished.
  3. A Secretary of State for India was created. He was a member of the British Cabinet and answerable to Parliament. A Council of India of fifteen members advised him.
  4. The Governor-General also became the Viceroy, that is, the Crown's personal representative in India. Lord Canning was the first Viceroy.

The Queen's Proclamation. On 1 November 1858 Queen Victoria announced the new policy. It promised no further taking of territory, no interference with religion, and admission of Indians to office without distinction of race or creed.

Its limit. The change was in the source of authority, not in Indian participation. Indians still had no share in government. That first came, in a small way, with the Indian Councils Act, 1861.
