The University does not publish an official answer key for this paper. The answers in this volume are model answers, written to show how a full-mark answer is built. They are a study aid, not an authority on what an examiner marked.

The question paper reproduced here is the paper as set by the University of Mumbai at the Nov 2024 examination.

The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the Nov 2024 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

Duration 1 hours  ·  Total marks 30  ·  12 questions answered

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

A)List and explain the functions of DBA.[5]

Answer

For full marks, cover: who the DBA is, then each function with a line of explanation: schema definition, storage and access methods, granting authorisation, integrity constraints, backup and recovery, performance monitoring and tuning, and routine maintenance.

Who the DBA is

The Database Administrator (DBA) is the person, or team, who has central control over the database and the programs that access it. The DBA decides what data is stored, how it is stored, and who may use it. In a college, for example, the DBA looks after the student, fees and examination databases.

Functions of the DBA

  1. Schema definition. The DBA creates the database schema, the overall design of tables, columns and relationships, using DDL statements such as CREATE TABLE.
  2. Storage structure and access methods. The DBA decides how data is physically stored on disk and which indexes to create, so queries run fast.
munotes.in 2
  1. Schema and physical changes. As needs change, the DBA modifies the schema (ALTER TABLE) or the storage, without disturbing the users.
  2. Granting authorisation (security). The DBA creates user accounts and grants or revokes privileges, so each user sees and changes only what is allowed. For example, a clerk may read fee records but not change marks.
  3. Integrity constraints. The DBA defines rules such as PRIMARY KEY, NOT NULL, CHECK and FOREIGN KEY, so wrong data cannot enter the database.
  4. Backup and recovery. The DBA takes regular backups and restores the database after a crash, a disk failure or a mistake.
  5. Performance monitoring and tuning. The DBA watches response times and storage use, and tunes queries, indexes and memory when the system slows down.
  6. Routine maintenance. The DBA checks free disk space, upgrades the DBMS software and applies security patches.
  7. Liaison with users. The DBA helps programmers and end users, and settles conflicting demands between departments.
munotes.in 3

Conclusion. The DBA is the guardian of the database. By defining the schema, controlling storage and access, enforcing integrity, securing data and keeping backups, the DBA keeps the data correct, safe, available and fast for every user.
