How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Answer the following in not more than 2 to 3 sentences

Answer
Section 29 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, defines it. The definition now appears in section 2(8) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which also brings in electronic and digital records.
The word "document" denotes "any matter expressed or described upon any substance by means of letters, figures or marks", or by more than one of those means. That matter must be "intended to be used, or which may be used, as evidence of that matter".
There are therefore three ingredients.
Two Explanations widen it. Explanation 1 says it is immaterial by what means or upon what substance the letters, figures or marks are formed. It is also immaterial whether the evidence is intended for a Court of Justice or not.
So a writing on paper, on stone, on cloth or on metal is equally a document. A cheque, a will, a map and a plan are all documents. The Sanhita's definition expressly includes an electronic or digital record, which matters for offences of forgery.
