How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer
The first Supreme Court in India was the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Calcutta. It was established in 1774.
How it came about. Section 13 of the Regulating Act, 1773 empowered the Crown to set up a Supreme Court at Fort William in Bengal. The Crown did so by a Charter (Letters Patent) dated 26 March 1774.
Its composition. It had a Chief Justice and three puisne (junior) judges, all of them English barristers. Sir Elijah Impey was the first Chief Justice.
Its powers. It had civil, criminal, admiralty, ecclesiastical and equity jurisdiction over British subjects in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. An appeal lay from it to the King in Council in England.
Why it is remembered. The Act did not define clearly whom the Court could try, or whether the Governor-General's Council was subject to it. So the Court and the Council clashed openly, in cases such as the trial of Raja Nandkumar (1775) and the Patna Case. The Act of Settlement, 1781 later cut down the Court's jurisdiction.
What came later. Similar Supreme Courts were set up at Madras in 1801 and at Bombay in 1823. All three were abolished by the Indian High Courts Act, 1861, when the High Courts took their place.
