How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Q1. Answer the following questions in two sentences, any 6 of 10

Answer
International Relations (IR) is the systematic study of the interactions among sovereign states and the other actors that operate across national borders. It also studies the international system in which they act, and the causes of conflict and cooperation within it. One difference: IR is the wider field and covers every interaction across borders. International politics is its narrower part: the official dealings of governments, centred on power.
The two meanings explained.
| International Politics | International Relations |
|---|---|
| Official relations between governments | Every interaction across borders that shapes how the world is run |
| Diplomacy, treaties, alliances, war and peace | Also trade, migration, law, international organisations, companies, campaign groups |
| Actors: states only | Actors: states and non-state actors |
| Centred on power | Includes power, but also economics, law and culture |
Definitions from the writers. Morgenthau wrote in 1948 that "International politics, like all politics, is a struggle for power." Palmer and Perkins described the real purpose of the subject as the analytical study of relations between states.
Which meaning MU uses. Most present courses, including this one, use the broad meaning. Module II of the syllabus is entirely about actors other than states, such as multinational companies, which the narrow meaning would leave out.
The word. "International" was coined by Jeremy Bentham, for the law between sovereigns.
