The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the 2025-26 - ATKT 60/40 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

(a)Define International Relations[2]

Answer

International relations (IR) is the systematic study of the interactions among sovereign states and the other actors that operate across national boundaries. These interactions are political, economic, legal and social. It also studies the international system within which those interactions take place, and the causes of conflict and co-operation in that system.

In simple words, IR studies how countries, and the other groups that act across their borders, deal with one another. It asks how they talk, trade, bargain, co-operate and fight, and why they do so in the way they do.

Its actors are states first, and also intergovernmental organisations such as the UN, international NGOs, multinational companies and armed groups. Its subject matter includes war and peace, diplomacy, foreign policy, and international law and organisation. It also covers trade and finance, and global problems such as climate change and migration.

munotes.in 2

IR is wider than international politics. International politics is mainly concerned with diplomacy and the struggle for power among sovereign states. IR covers every kind of relation across borders, official and unofficial, political and non-political.

IR became an autonomous academic discipline after the First World War. The first chair in the subject, the Woodrow Wilson Chair, was founded at Aberystwyth in 1919. Its founders hoped that systematic study could help prevent another such war.
