How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Q.1 A Answer in two sentences only

(1)'Exactly and remember it after words' you men. You're weak weak, weak 'who is the speakers? What was the context in which the speaker said above words?[2]

Answer

The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The speaker is Mrs. Turton, the wife of the Collector, in E. M. Forster's A Passage to India, Chapter XXIV. She says it in Ronny Heaslop's private room at the court, just before Aziz's trial, when the English talk of punishing Indians.

Where the line comes from. Major Callendar boasts of the injuries to Nureddin, whom he is treating at the hospital. He laughs at the young man's lost teeth. Mrs. Turton cries, "At last some sense is being talked." Another lady says there is no such thing as cruelty after such a crime. Mrs. Turton agrees, and says this to the men.

Why the line matters. She goes on to say that Indians "ought to crawl from here to the caves on their hands and knees". Forster shows the English mood before the trial: hatred, fear and a hunger for revenge. That mood makes Adela's later withdrawal of the charge all the more shocking to them.
