Instructions printed on the paper

  • N.B: 1. All questions are compulsory. 2. Figures to the right indicate maximum marks.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Q.1

Q.1 Answer in two sentences only

any 6 of 10 · 12 Marks

munotes.in 1

(i)"You were found lying in the moat why did you leave the tower?" Identify the speaker of the above line? Who was found lying in the moat?[2]

Answer

The answer, in the two sentences the paper allows. The speaker is Canon John D'Estivet, the Promoter, or prosecutor, at Joan's trial in Scene VI of Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan. It was Joan who was found lying in the moat, after she leapt from a tower to escape from prison.

Where the line comes from. Canon de Courcelles has asked how Joan survived jumping from a tower sixty feet high, if she cannot fly like a witch. Joan jokes that the tower "has grown higher every day since you began asking me questions about it." D'Estivet asks why she jumped, and she answers, "How do you know that I jumped?" He replies with this line.

Why the line matters. Joan answers frankly: "Why would anybody leave a prison if they could get out?" D'Estivet at once calls her attempt to escape "a confession of heresy", because she fled the Church's custody. Shaw shows how her honesty and plain sense are turned into evidence against her.
