About this subject
English 1 is the language paper of the first BLS LLB semester, paper code 75901, and it is English chosen for people who are going to practise law. The questions keep returning to courtrooms: Shylock and Antonio before the court in The Merchant of Venice, Jake Brigance defending Carl Lee Hailey in A Time to Kill, Pickwick sued for breach of promise, the evidence Pudd'nhead Wilson produces, the testimony of Sarah Stone and John Olding in Adam Bede, Socrates answering his accusers, and Bacon on what a judge is for. Read the texts as trials and the long questions stop behaving like literature questions.
The paper runs in two patterns and it is worth knowing which one you are sitting. The 75:25 pattern is 75 marks in two and a half hours, five sections, ending with three long questions of 13 marks each. The 60:40 pattern is 60 marks in two hours, six sections, ending with two long questions of 12 marks each. The reading behind both is the same. Only the arithmetic changes.
Four marks of this paper are the same three operations in every sitting we have solved. Section 2 gives you one line of direct speech to convert into indirect speech for 2 marks, one sentence whose voice you change for 1 mark, and one sentence that needs a question tag for 1 mark. Only the order of the last two moves. It is the cheapest scoring on the paper and it can be learned in an evening.
The composition section is law-flavoured too, and the forms repeat even when the topics do not: an application enclosing your bio-data for a post at a law firm, a letter of complaint to a municipal authority about water, garbage or an electricity bill, and a welcome speech for a moot court event or a legal aid clinic. Learn the three layouts and the only thing left to think about on the day is the content.
