Sr. Specialist Solutions Architect, Builder Team

Despite the Solutions Architect title, this is a backend engineering job. The Builder Team maintains Databricks Labs, the open tooling that extends the Databricks platform, and the posting asks for production backend or infrastructure development with at least one compiled language required. You build, debug and extend public and internal infrastructure components, implement backend services, APIs and automation that integrate with the platform, and own small to medium projects end to end while partnering with Lead Specialist Solutions Architects on bigger ones. It is grouped here with the customer facing roles because it carries a customer empathy and product mindset expectation and supports field engineering teams, but the daily work is code. At 6 or more years it is the most accessible Databricks role on this list.

The employer asks for 6 or more years of production experience in backend or infrastructure development, with proficiency in at least two of Terraform, Scala, Go, Apache Spark, Java and Python, and experience with at least one compiled language is required. Also required: experience delivering complex backend or infrastructure projects in iterative increments, balancing robustness against development speed, and a stated passion for defensive engineering practice.

The day to day: building, debugging and extending internal and public infrastructure components of the Databricks Labs ecosystem with a focus on scalable, reliable backend services and automation; implementing and maintaining backend services, APIs and automation tools that integrate with the Databricks platform; authoring technical documentation, design proposals and internal guides; contributing to engineering best practice, coding standards and reusable patterns; collaborating with Field Engineering, Product and Platform Engineering to clarify requirements; evaluating and integrating new technology for the Labs and automation tooling ecosystem; owning small to medium projects end to end; and taking part in code reviews, design reviews and incident response.
