Bachelor of Performing Arts (Music - Hindustani Tabla) Practical Paper Viva Voce Syllabus - Mumbai University

This is the NEP 2020 syllabus for B.P.A. (Music - Hindustani Tabla), in force from the academic year 2025-26. Semesters I to IV are set by University circular item 8.17 (R) of 20 May 2025 and Semesters V and VI by item 8.49 (N) of the same date; the Semester III Field Project is set separately, by item 8.1 (N) 1.5(b) of 15 July 2025. The University examines this degree under exam form 4945361 and spells it both "Bachelor of Performing Arts (Music-Hindustani Tabla)", in her Summer 2026 timetables, and "B.P.A. Course Objectives

  • Ability to render Chatasra and Tisra Jati Kayadas and Relas in zaptal having Phrase tit and tirkit with at least eight variations and Tihai/Chakradar.
  • Ability to render Gat tukadas and Chakradars in zaptal with Padhant
  • Ability to compose Tihai with given phrase and understanding the importance of tihai in music.
  • Ability to render expandable and non-expandable compositions in Jhaptal.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Understand & appreciate the facets of Kayada improvisation.
  • Render the single, double and triple,quadruple of thekas.
  • Present few expandable and non-expandable compositions in Ektaal and Jhaptal
  • Ability to compose Tihai with given phrase and understanding the importance of tihai in music.

Module 1: Presentation of Kayada composition in zaptaal

  • Chatasra Jati Kayada with phrase tit and tirkit
  • Tisra Jati Kayada with phrase tit/tirkit

Module 2: Presentation in Zaptaal

  • Peshkar ,Kayda,Rela with 5 paltas in Zaptaal
  • Gat Tukadas and Chakradar with Padhant in Zaptaal

Module 3: Presentation of following Taalas in single, double, Triple and quadruple speed ( By tabla and hands both)

  • Jhumra,Tilwada, Dhamar
  • One kayda, one rela with 4 palta, 4 tukda, chakradar in Ektaal.

Module 4

  • Ability to tune Tabla
  • Ability to compose simple tihai with given phrase.
