This is the FY BE AI and DS syllabus under NEP 2020, in force from the academic year 2024-25. The third and fourth years of this degree are still taught on the earlier CBCS REV-2019 'C' Scheme, because the University has published no NEP syllabus for Semesters V to VIII of any engineering branch.

Semester 2 · FY BE AI and DS · NEP 2020

Module I: Air Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry 4 hours

  • A) Chemistry and mechanism of some global effects of air pollution – Acid rain, Ozone hole, Photochemical smog B) Gaseous Pollutants: i) Measurement of gaseous pollutants; ii) Methods to control emissions of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and gaseous hydrocarbons. C) Automotive emission controls: Measurement and control, catalytic convertors.

Module II: Water & Waste water Treatment and Management 4 hours

  • A) Classification of water pollutants – Organic, Inorganic, Suspended, Radioactive, Heat. B) Monitoring Techniques and methodology for following parameters: Hardness, pH, Dissolved oxygen, Chloride (Numerical) C) Point and nonpoint sources of water pollution D) Characteristics of waste water, Acidification, Eutrophication and thermal stratification of lake water. E) Wastewater treatment: Primary treatment, Secondary Treatment – Activated Sludge Process, Tertiary Treatment F) Relevance of determining Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical
  • Oxygen Demand (COD) with reference to waste water treatment process, numerical

Module III: Solid and Hazardous Waste Management 4 hours

  • A) Integrated solid waste management; Waste hierarchy; Rules and regulations for solid waste management in India. Definition and Composition Hazardous waste. B) Hazardous waste management: Control Methods: - i) Physical Methods – Sedimentation, Adsorption, Ion exchange methods, Electrodialysis, Reverse Osmosis ii) Chemical Methods – Neutralization, Chemical precipitation, chemical oxidation-reduction, biological treatment, incineration

Module IV: Introduction to non-conventional (Renewable) energy sources 4 hours

  • A) Need of non-conventional energy sources. B) Renewable Sources of Energy such as Hydro, Solar, Wind, Biomass, Tidal and Geothermal - their availability and limitations.

Module V: Non-conventional Energy sources 4 hours

  • A) Biomass Energy: - i) Definition, ii) Sources of Biomass – Wood, Agricultural crop, Animal waste, Algae, Sewage waste iii) Advantages and disadvantages of Biomass, iv) Important Biomass processes – Pyrolysis, Gasification, Anaerobic decomposition, v) Uses of biomass – (Direct) for heat generation and (Indirect) for conversion to biofuel B) Hydrogen fuel cell

Module VI: Sustainable Practices 4 hours

  • A) Energy Resources available B) Consumption practices in different parts of the world. C) Natural Resource management & Environmental Ethics D) Importance of Responsible Consumption. E) Introduction to concept of Energy Audit
