Syllabus for Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS

Module 1: Remote Sensing Data Acquisition and Image Processing

  • 1 Satellite Data Sources and Characteristics (Landsat, Sentinel, IRS; spatial, spectral, temporal and radiometric resolution; metadata interpretation)
  • 2 Image Pre-processing Techniques (layer stacking, mosaicking, subsetting, geometric and radiometric correction)
  • 3 Image Enhancement and Interpretation (contrast stretching, histogram equalization, False Colour Composite generation, visual interpretation techniques and interpretation keys)
  • 4 Digital Image Classification and Accuracy Assessment (supervised and unsupervised classification, training samples, confusion/error matrix, kappa coefficient)

Module 2: GIS Database Creation and Spatial Data Management

  • 1 Georeferencing and Map Projection Systems (ground control points, coordinate systems – Geographic and UTM, datum concepts)
  • 2 Digitization and Topology Building (point, line and polygon digitization; topology rules; error detection and correction)
  • 3 Attribute Data Management (creation and editing of attribute tables, joins and relates, integration of Excel/CSV data)
  • 4 Raster and Vector Data Models (data structures, conversion techniques, spatial database creation and management)

Module 3: Spatial Analysis and Geospatial Modelling

  • 1 Proximity and Buffer Analysis (point, line and polygon buffers; nearest neighbour analysis)
  • 2 Overlay Techniques (clip, union, intersection, dissolve; multi-criteria analysis)
  • 3 DEM and Terrain Analysis (slope, aspect, contour generation, hillshade analysis)
  • 4 Suitability and Network Modelling (weighted overlay, site suitability analysis, shortest path and service area analysis)

Module 4: Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS

  • 1 Land Use / Land Cover Mapping and Change Detection (classification outputs, post- classification comparison techniques)
  • 2 Urban and Regional Applications (urban sprawl mapping, infrastructure planning, population density mapping)
  • 3 Environmental and Resource Applications (watershed delineation, NDVI analysis, water body mapping, pollution mapping)
  • 4 Disaster Management Applications (flood zonation, landslide susceptibility mapping, risk and vulnerability assessment)
