Course objectives

  • To introduce students to the art and craft of storyboarding, enabling them to visualize scripts, communicate ideas visually, and create compelling visual narratives across various formats such as film, animation, and advertising. The course will also build foundational storytelling skills essential for translating written word into visual sequences.

Course outcomes

  • Understand the principles of visual storytelling
  • Develop the ability to translate a script into compelling storyboards
  • Apply design principles like perspective, composition, and lighting
  • Communicate visually with clarity and intent
  • Prepare boards for real-world production pipelines and professional pitches

Module 1: Introduction to Storyboarding & Visual Storytelling 10 hours

  • 1. What is a storyboard and why it matters
  • 2. Role of storyboarding in film, animation, advertising
  • 3. Types of storyboards: presentation boards, production boards, animatics, live-action boards
  • 4. Case studies: comparing storyboards and final scenes

Module 2: The Art of Storyboarding 10 hours

  • 1. Thumbnail sketching: ideation & flow
  • 2. Sketching basic human figures and expressions
  • 3. Action poses and figure movement

Module 3: Board Execution Techniques, Animatic & Directing Shots 10 hours

  • 1. Clean-up process and line clarity
  • 2. Color passes and presentation-ready boards
  • 3. Differences between presentation boards and production boards
