The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the May 2026 - 60/40 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

Duration 2 hours  ·  Total marks 60  ·  22 questions answered

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

(a)What is AYUSH?[2]

Answer

AYUSH is an acronym for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. These are the Indian and traditional systems of medicine that the law recognises alongside modern medicine. The word is also the name of the Union Ministry that looks after them.

The Ministry. It began in 1995 as a Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy in the Health Ministry. It was renamed the Department of AYUSH in November 2003. On 9 November 2014 it became a separate Ministry of AYUSH. It promotes education, research and quality medicines in these systems. It works through research councils and national institutes such as the All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi.

The regulators. Two statutory Commissions regulate their practice. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine covers Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Sowa-Rigpa, under the NCISM Act, 2020. The National Commission for Homoeopathy covers homoeopathy, under the NCH Act, 2020. Yoga and naturopathy have no central statutory regulator.

Their medicines. Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs are governed by Chapter IVA of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. It requires licences and standards for their manufacture for sale. A practitioner registered in one AYUSH system may practise that system. He may not practise modern medicine without legal authority (Poonam Verma v. Ashwin Patel, AIR 1996 SC 2111).
