The Paper as Set

The questions in this volume are the questions asked at the May 2022 examination, reproduced as the University of Mumbai set them, in the order it set them. Nothing has been reworded, added or left out. Only the answers are ours. See the original question paper.

How to use this volume

Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

munotes.in 1

1Amniocentesis means, removing the fluid from the (a) Lungs (b) Amniocentesis Ovaries (c) Heart (d) Uterus

Answer

(d) Uterus. Amniocentesis takes a small amount of the fluid that surrounds the baby inside the uterus.

Why. A needle is passed, under ultrasound guidance, into the sac that holds the baby, and "removes a small amount of fluid from the sac around the baby" (MedlinePlus, US National Library of Medicine). The fluid is tested for genetic and other abnormalities.

In law. Taking or removing samples of "amniotic fluid" is a "pre-natal diagnostic procedure" (section 2(i), Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994). It may be done only to detect the abnormalities in section 4(2), never to find the sex of the foetus.

The other options. The fluid does not come from the lungs, the heart or the ovaries. Option (b), printed as "Amniocentesis Ovaries", is a misprint and is also wrong.
