How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer
A writ is a formal written command issued by a superior court to a person, an authority or an inferior court, requiring it to do or to stop doing something. The five writs came into English law as prerogative writs, issued in the name of the Crown. India took them into the Constitution.
Where the power comes from.
The five writs, in one line each.
Conclusion. A writ is the command by which a superior court controls the exercise of power. In administrative law the writs are the enforcement machinery: every rule the subject teaches reaches the citizen only through Article 32 or Article 226. L. Chandra Kumar v. Union of India (1997) 3 SCC 261 holds that judicial review under Articles 226 and 227 is part of the basic structure, so this machinery cannot be legislated away.
