How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.
Q1: Answer in not more than two sentences, any 6 of 10
12 Marks - 2 marks each
Answer
In the Preamble the people of India resolve to secure to all citizens justice, liberty and equality, and to promote among them fraternity. These four ideals are commonly called its four pillars:
How the Constitution carries them out. Justice is pursued through the Directive Principles, such as Article 38. Liberty is protected by Articles 19 to 22 and 25. Equality is guaranteed by Articles 14 to 18. Fraternity is served by the abolition of untouchability (Article 17) and the fundamental duties (Article 51A).
Why they are called pillars. They are the values on which the rest of the Constitution stands. The same Preamble declares India a "sovereign socialist secular democratic republic", and the four ideals describe what that republic must secure for its people.
Their legal value. The Preamble is part of the Constitution and is used to interpret it. In Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala, AIR 1973 SC 1461, the Court read the basic structure of the Constitution partly from the Preamble.
