How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer
The Bar is the body of advocates who argue cases in court. The Bench is the judges who hear and decide them. Together they carry on the administration of justice.
The Bar. Under section 29 of the Advocates Act, 1961 there is "only one class of persons entitled to practise the profession of law, namely, advocates". An advocate is a person enrolled on a State roll (section 24). Under section 33 only an enrolled advocate may practise in a court. The Bar is regulated by the State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India. They make rules of conduct and can discipline an advocate for misconduct (section 35).
The Bench. The word means the judges of a court together, or the judge or judges hearing a particular case. Judges are appointed and protected by the Constitution: Article 124 for the Supreme Court, Article 217 for the High Courts and Article 233 for district judges.
The two depend on each other. In S.P. Gupta v. President of India, AIR 1982 SC 149, Tulzapurkar J. called practising lawyers "nothing short of partners in the task of administration of justice". The Bar argues, the Bench decides, and both are bound to the same end: justice according to law.
