How to use this volume
Solve the paper first, under exam conditions and against the clock. Then read the answers here and mark your own. Reading a solution before attempting the question feels productive and teaches very little, because recognising an answer is not the same as being able to write one.

Answer
The definition. Section 5(ca) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 says: "banking policy means any policy which is specified from time to time by the Reserve Bank in the interest of the banking system or in the interest of monetary stability or sound economic growth, having due regard to the interests of the depositors, the volume of deposits and other resources of the bank and the need for equitable allocation and the efficient use of these deposits and resources".
Its parts.
Where the Act uses it. "Banking policy" is a ground on which the Reserve Bank may act. The Reserve Bank may give directions to banks in the interest of banking policy (section 35A(1)(aa)). It may also determine the policy on advances in the interest of banking policy (section 21(1)).
Conclusion. Banking policy is any policy the Reserve Bank specifies for the banking system, monetary stability or growth (section 5(ca)). It must have regard to depositors and the efficient use of deposits.
