Q1Explain the view of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on religion and philosophy.[10]

Answer

For full marks, cover: philosophy in India is woven into life, not remote from it; religion must be a rational way of living, shown in thought, action and social institutions; religion as the inner life, not ceremony; ethics and religion bound together; all life a sacrament, values realised in family and friendship; service of the poor demanded by religion; philosophy as the formation of character; the silent hour; conclusion.

Introduction

Radhakrishnan refused to treat philosophy and religion as subjects shut away in books or temples. In My Search for Truth he explains both as part of daily living. For him, a philosophy that does not change life, and a religion that does not show itself in conduct and society, are both incomplete.

1. Philosophy woven into life

He says philosophy in India is not an abstract study remote from the life of man. It is woven into the texture of human existence. Indian civilization, in his view, is an effort to put philosophical wisdom into social life. A verse of the Mahabharata, he notes, says that the mark of the noble person is not learning, not religion, but conduct alone.

2. Religion as a rational way of living

His very first work was the thesis on the Ethics of the Vedanta. From then on, he held that religion must establish itself as a rational way of living. If the spirit is to be at home in this world, and not a prisoner or a fugitive, secular foundations must be laid deep. Religion, he says, must express itself in reasonable thought, fruitful action and right social institutions.

3. Religion is inner life, not ceremony

Religion, for him, is essentially a concern of the inner life. Its end is spiritual certainty, which lifts life above meaningless existence or despair. The days of outward, ceremonial religion that can live side by side with deceit are over. He adds that religion is what we do with ourselves when we are alone.

4. Ethics and religion go together

He held that the aim of religion is a vision of God. The aim of ethics is to remake human life in the mould of the unseen. The two are bound up with each other. The sense of the spiritual and the longing for righteousness go together. The ethical life purifies the mind, and the spirit, once realised, fills life with ethical character.

5. All life a sacrament

Spiritual values, he says, are realised on earth through family love, friendship, loyalty and reverence. To the truly religious, all life is a sacrament. Religion is not an escape from ordinary duties but a way of doing them.

6. Service of others

He says modern efforts to improve the lot of the needy and downtrodden are not opposed to Hindu religion but demanded by it. Elsewhere he puts it simply: religion consists in doing justice, loving mercy and making our fellow creatures happy. A saint is not a stained-glass image but one who works for his fellow men.

7. Philosophy forms character

Philosophy, in his view, is a great instrument of liberal education. Its aim is to lift a person above worldliness, make him superior to circumstances and free his spirit from bondage to material things. It arms him against failure and sorrow. In one phrase, the object of philosophy is to form men.

8. The silent hour

To join both into daily life, he urged his students to keep a silent hour each day. It was a time for self-communion, to collect their thoughts and find themselves. In that silence, he says, we hear the voice of the soul and learn how to make life an offering to the Divine.

Reason and insight together

Radhakrishnan did not want religion to give up reason. He hoped for a living religion that even free and disillusioned minds could accept without surrendering the rights of reason. At the same time, he held that the deepest truths are grasped by intuitive insight, in which the intellect still plays a large part. So philosophy and religion meet in daily life as partners: reason keeps religion honest, and religious insight keeps philosophy from becoming dry.

munotes.in 5

Conclusion. Radhakrishnan explained philosophy and religion as integral parts of life because, for him, both must change the way we live. Philosophy forms character and is woven into society. Religion is an inner experience that must show itself in reason, ethical conduct, family life and service of others. A religion confined to ceremony, or a philosophy confined to books, would have been, in his eyes, neither true religion nor true philosophy.
