Syllabus for Energy System Design Lab
Module 1: Basic Energy Calculations
- Calculation of energy consumption: Calculate kWh using simple wattage ratings (from device labels) or Wattmeter and Calculator; Measure rpm using mobile stroboscope app, power using plug-in meter. Reading and understanding energy bills; Understanding energy related details of equipments, appliances; Calculating monthly energy cost, energy intensity, etc.
Module 2: Energy Audit
- Conducting walk-through energy audit: Identifying energy consumption patterns, energy losses, suggesting ways to stop energy losses: Identify wasteful practices related to lighting, fan usage, ventilation, computer standby losses; No instruments required except lux meter (mobile app) & thermometer.
Module 3: Energy Efficient Techniques
- Evaluating energy efficiency of energy consuming devices, equipments, appliances and identifying or suggesting best energy efficient techniques for the same: Measure power consumption of various types of lighting lamps, fans, etc. using plug-in wattmeter OR use rated wattage; Estimate efficiency, Determine energy savings & payback period.
Module 4: Heat Integration
- Heat Integration through design of Heat Exchanger Network (HEN): Calculating heat content in process streams and using available softwares such as HINT, THEN, HTRI or any other suitable and available software to design HEN to achieve target of minimum energy requirement, minimum number of heat exchangers, and evaluate cost of HEN
Module 5: Waste Heat Recovery and Cogeneration
- Identifying sources of waste heat, calculating heat loss and perform cogeneration calculations: Check leakage of air at joints of Compressor, Compute energy loss by simple formula; Measure inside & outside temperature of room and Estimate heat loss by simple thermal resistance method; Consider any case study of Cogeneration and Provide turbine steam data and Calculate TSR, ASR, PGC.
Module 6: Non- conventional and Renewable Energy Sources
- Evaluation of potential and performance of Non- conventional energy sources: Estimate solar radiation intensity using available instruments or mobile apps; If solar cooker is available then, Measure temperature rise of water inside cooker and Calculate efficiency using solar radiation measured above; Calculate Biomass Combustion Efficiency using Simple Stove Test
