B.E. (Chemical Engineering) Chemical Reaction Engineering II Lab Syllabus - Mumbai University 2026
The University has moved this degree onto NEP 2020 one year at a time. The first, second and third years are on NEP 2020; the final year is still on the REV-2019 'C' Scheme, which is what the University sets for it this year.

Syllabus for Chemical Reaction Engineering-II Lab
Module 1: Residence Time Distribution – Impulse Input Analysis
- Study of residence time distribution (RTD) in CSTR, Plug Flow Reactor (PFR), and Packed Bed Reactor (PBR) using impulse tracer technique. Determination of mean residence time (tm), theoretical residence time (τ), variance, and plotting of C, E, and F curves to compare ideal and non-ideal reactor behavior.
Module 2: Residence Time Distribution – Step Input Analysis
- Analysis of RTD characteristics in CSTR and PFR using step tracer input. Evaluation of concentration–time response curves and comparison with theoretical predictions for ideal reactors.
Module 3: Catalyst Characterization and catalytic Reaction kinetics
- Determination of void volume, solid density, and porosity of catalyst particles. Understanding the influence of catalyst properties on flow behavior and reactor performance
Module 4: Solid–Fluid Non- Catalytic Reaction Kinetics
- Development of kinetic expressions for solid–fluid non-catalytic reactions using experimental data, analysis of conversion– time behavior, and identification of rate- controlling mechanisms by applying shrinking core model and diffusion– reaction concepts.
Module 5: Semi-Batch Reactor Operation and Analysis
- Study of operating principles and characteristics of semi-batch reactors, material balance analysis, conversion versus time evaluation, and comparison with batch and continuous reactors.
Module 6: Adiabatic Batch Reactor Analysis
- Study of adiabatic reactor operation, energy balance under adiabatic conditions, temperature–conversion relationship, and estimation of batch reaction time using quantitative analysis.
