BSc Home Science Textile Science Syllabus - Mumbai University

This is the Semester 4 syllabus under NEP 2020, in force from the academic year 2025-26. The University still examines the earlier Choice Based papers alongside it — her third-year timetables name that scheme — so check which scheme your exam form names before you revise.

Module I

  • A Qualitative analysis of fabrics:
  • i Identification of pure fibres: cotton, jute, linen, silk, wool, viscose rayon, acetate rayon, polyester, nylon, acrylic by following tests: o Burning tests. o Microscopic tests. o Solubility tests.
  • ii Identification of blends by following tests (Any 2 samples): o Burning tests. o Microscopic tests. o Solubility tests.
  • B Care labels on textiles and garments.
  • C Care and laundry procedure for different types of fabrics o Washing, Blueing and Starching.
  • D Stain removal: o Classification of stains, principles and procedures of stain removal. (3 stains in each category: vegetable, protein, mineral, oil-based, miscellaneous).

Module II

  • E Wet processing of textiles:
  • i Pretreatment: De-sizing, scouring bleaching and mercerization of greige cotton.
  • ii Shade card of direct dye on cotton (3 shades of 3 different colours).
  • iii Tie and dye (any 2 basic techniques): Two samples with reactive dye on cotton fabric.
  • iv Stencil making and printing on T shirt with acrylic colours
  • v Post treatment: Soaping, dye fixation (direct dye) and curing of the above samples.
