B.F.A. (Sculpture) Optional Syllabus - Mumbai University 2026
This is the University of Mumbai syllabus for B.F.A. (Sculpture), Circular No. UG/210 of 2004 dated 28 May 2004 (Ordinances 5324 to 5330, Regulations 4545 to 4568), in force from the academic year 2004-2005. Circular No. UG/353 of 2008 amended the Final Year ordinance, O.5329, and changed no subject. It is still the scheme examined: the University set the Summer 2026 papers on it — History of Art (83301) and Aesthetics (83302) in the Second Year, History of Art (83401) in the Final Year — and has published no later B.F.A. syllabus. The Third Year B.F.A. examination is conducted by the college recognised by the University of Mumbai, not by the University itself.

Syllabus for Optional
The University marks this subject “Not for examination”. It is taught and its work is assessed during the year, but no paper is set for it.
MU’s Education Pattern table prints this subject as “Optional Following any of the subject”. The student takes one of the three.
Group II (Practicals) Studio Practicals per Academic Year: 80 hours
- A) Wood:
- Theoretical study of different type of woods that are used in wood carving such as Teak-Rose wood and similar to that study of various possibilities of woodcarving methods. Study of wood carving methods also methods of joining wood, wood treatment and wood seasoning etc. Assignment based on carving on wood block and assembling the wooden various coloured pieces.
- B.) Stone:
- Theoretical study of different Textural stones like porbandar, Mathura, Marble (in various colours study of stone carving method Tampering for Chisels finishing methods for stone use of hand chisels and Pneumatics Chisels for Marble Carvings.) Assignment based on direct carving in stone block lessons on professional methods i.e. Enlarging methods and pointing methods for transforming plaster model in marble.
- C) Metal :
- Theoretical study of different metals and here use in sculpture. Copper, Brass, Lead and there used in response in round and in relief, construction of Aluminium sheets, Galvanized Brass and Copper rod pipes made stripes, Exploring the possibilities and limitations of metal sculptors by casting. Exercises in all stages of - Taking mould casting, finishing and Platination. Study of sand casting process & its Limitation & possibilities regarding the structure of art form.
