Module 1: Introduction to Reaction Engineering and Kinetics of Homogeneous Reactions printed in the syllabus as Module Detailed Content

  • Definitions of reaction rate, Variables affecting reaction rate, Speed of chemical reactions. Formulation of the rate equation. Molecularity and order of reaction. Rate constant k, temperature-dependent term of the rate equations from Arrhenius theory. Representation of an elementary and non-elementary reaction. Kinetic models for non-elementary reactions. Reaction mechanism and its influence on kinetics. Search for a plausible mechanism via reaction kinetics. Self Learning Topics :Enzyme Kinetics and Michaleis Menten Model Temperature Dependence of Reaction Rates: Collision Theory and Transition State Theory

Module 2: Methods of analysis of experimental data (constant volume) printed in the syllabus as Module Detailed Content

  • a) Analysis of total pressure data. b) Integral method of analysis of experimental data. c) Differential method for analysing experimental data. d) Concept of Half Life/Fractional Life. Overall order of an irreversible reaction. Self Learning Topics : Determination of Reaction Order Using the Method of Initial Rates and Ostwald's Dilution Method

Module 3: Methods of analysis of experimental data (multiple reaction system + variable volume) printed in the syllabus as Module Detailed Content

  • Integral method of analysis for : a) First-order reversible reaction. b) Irreversible reaction in parallel and in series (first Order). c) Homogeneous catalysed reactions. d) Auto-catalytic reactions. e) Shifting order reactions. f) Variable volume reaction. Self Learning Topics : Analysis of Consecutive Homogeneous Reactions of Different Orders ( Ex. Zero order followed by first order)

Module 4: Design of Reactors: (Design for single reactions) printed in the syllabus as Module Detailed Content

  • Ideal batch reactor and concept of batch time. Flow reactor and concept of space time/space velocity and holding time/residence time. Ideal Mixed Flow Reactor (MFR) and Plug Flow Reactor (PFR). Single reactor performance of irreversible and reversible first-order, pseudo-first-order, and second-order reactions for MFR and PFR. Graphical and analytical techniques. Self Learning Topics : Performance Comparison of Batch, CSTR, and PFR for Autocatalytic Homogeneous Reactions.

Module 5: Design of Reactors: (Combination of Reactors) printed in the syllabus as Module Detailed Content

  • Performance of the multiple reactors for the first-order reactions. a) PFR in series/ parallel. b) MFR in series/ parallel. c) Unequal size MFR in series. d) PFR-MFR in series Introduction to Semi-batch and Recycle Reactor.
