Syllabus for Digital Signal Processing (abbreviated as DSP)

Semester 5 · Third Year Biomedical Rev 2019 C Scheme · 3 credits · 100 marks

Module 1

  • Basic elements of Digital Signal Processing, concepts of frequency in analog and digital signals, sampling theorem, discrete time signals and systems their properties, Z-transform and properties, Linear & circular convolution, Correlation, DTFT.

Module 2

  • Introduction to DFT, Properties of DFT, DIT and DIF, FFT algorithms, use of FFT in linear filtering, discrete cosine transforms.

Module 3

  • Review of design of analog Butterworth and Chebyshev filters, frequency transformation in analog domain, design of IIR digital filters using impulse invariance method, design of digital filters using bilinear transformation.

Module 4

  • Structure of FIR filters, linear phase filters, filter design using window technique, frequency sampling techniques, finite word length effects in digital filters, realisation of FIR & IIR filters, direct, cascade and parallel forms.

Module 5

  • Introduction to digital signal processors, architecture, features, addressing formats, functional mode, introduction to commercial processors, applications.

Module 6

  • Preliminaries, biomedical signals (ECG, EMG, EEG) origin & dynamics, statistical preliminaries, time domain filtering (synchronized averaging, moving average), time domain filtering (moving average filter to integration-derivative based operator), Frequency domain filtering (notch Filter), optimal filtering: Weiner filter, adaptive filtering, selecting appropriate filter
