B.E. (Biomedical Engineering) Medical Sensors Lab Syllabus - Mumbai University

This is the Second Year Biomedical Rev 2019 C Scheme syllabus under REV-2019 'C' Scheme, in force from the academic year 2020-21. The University also publishes a NEP 2020 syllabus for Semesters III and IV, which is what the current second year is taught; this scheme is what ATKT candidates of the earlier batches still sit. Check which scheme your examination form names before you revise.

The University prints the same name, “Medical Sensors (Abbreviated as MS)”, for two separate courses of this semester: the theory course, examined at the end of the semester, and this one, the laboratory course, which carries practical hours and is assessed as term work. The University's own programme structure table names this one “Medical Sensors Lab”, and only the address here says “Lab”, to keep the two apart. The title above is the University's own.

Course Objectives

  • To analyse the transient response of a first-order system.
  • To measure displacement using various displacement sensors.
  • To measure pressure using a pressure sensor.
  • To measure force using a force sensor.
  • To measure temperature using various temperature sensors.
  • To measure pH of a solution using a pH electrode. Course Outcomes The learner will be able to:
  • Analyse step response of a first-order system.
  • Demonstrate the measurement of displacement using various displacement sensors.
  • Demonstrate the measurement of force and pressure using a force sensor and a pressure sensor respectively.
  • Demonstrate the measurement of temperature using various temperature sensors.
  • Distinguish various biopotential electrodes.

  • 2 To study the resistance versus temperature characteristics of a thermistor.
  • 3 To study the thermistor linearization technique.
  • 4 To study the characteristics of a light dependent resister.
  • 5 To study the principle and working of a thermocouple.
  • 6 To study principle and working of L.V.D.T.
  • 7 To study principle and working of a capacitive sensor.
  • 8 To study principle and working of a strain gage sensor.
  • 9 To study principle and working of a pressure sensor.
  • 10 To study the principle and working of a force sensor.
  • 11 To study the various biopotential electrodes.
