Module I: Introduction to Operations Research

  • Definition, nature, Objectives with phases and scope of Operations Research (OR)
  • Role and significance of OR in transport and logistics management
  • Types of OR problems: deterministic and probabilistic
  • Applications of OR in fleet scheduling, route planning, and cost management

Module II: Linear Programming and Transportation Models

  • Introduction to Linear Programming (LPP) and its use in transport decision-making
  • Formulating transport and logistics problems as LPP
  • Transportation problem: basic concept and finding feasible solutions
  • Assignment problem: understanding allocation of resources in transport operations

Module III: Network Analysis and Inventory Models

  • Network techniques in transport projects: PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique), CPM (Critical Path Method)
  • Shortest path problem, minimal spanning tree problem, and their applications in route optimization
  • Inventory management for transport resources: EOQ (Economic Order Quantity), reorder point, safety stock
  • Applications in fleet management, spare parts, and resource allocation

Module IV: Queuing Theory, Simulation, and Decision-Making

  • Basics of queuing theory: concepts of arrival rate, service rate, waiting line models
  • Applications of queuing in transport terminals, fleet operations, and customer service
  • Simulation techniques: Monte Carlo simulation for route planning, fleet utilization, and inventory management
  • Decision-making under uncertainty: decision trees, payoff tables, and expected value analysis
