B.Com. (Accountancy) Accounting and Auditing I Management Accounting I Syllabus - Mumbai University

This is the SY BCom Accountancy syllabus under NEP 2020, in force from the academic year 2025-26. The University clubbed this degree with B.Com., B.Com. (Business Economics) and B.Com. (Business Management) on 25 May 2026 and now awards it as B.Com. (Commerce and Management), with Accountancy as the Major: the papers below are the ones its own Board of Studies sets, so your exam form may name the degree differently from your admission letter. The four Major papers of Semesters III and IV are the four credit versions the University issued on 22 June 2026, which carry twice the modules of the two credit papers set for these semesters before them.

Module I: Introduction to Management Accounting

  • Introduction to Management Accounting – Meaning, Nature, Scope, Functions, Decision Making Process, Financial Accounting V/s Management Accounting
  • Analysis and Interpretation of Financial Statements
  • Study of Balance sheet and Income statement / Revenue statements in vertical form suitable for analysis ii. Relationship between items in Balance Sheet and Revenue statement iii. Tools of analysis of Financial Statements (i) Trend analysis (ii) Comparative Statement (iii) Common Size Statement
  • Note : (i) Problems based on trend analysis (ii) Short Problems on Comparative and Common sized statements

Module II: Tools of analysis of Financial Statements

  • Meaning, objectives, advantages and limitations of financial statement analysis and interpretation.
  • Trend Analysis – Concept, selection of base year, computation of trend percentages and interpretation of trends in sales, profits, assets, liabilities and shareholders’ funds.
  • Comparative Financial Statements – Preparation and analysis of Comparative Income Statement and Comparative Balance Sheet, calculation of absolute and percentage changes, and interpretation of financial performance and position.
  • Common Size Financial Statements – Preparation and analysis of Common Size Income Statement and Common Size Balance Sheet, conversion of financial statement items into percentages, and interpretation of financial structure and profitability.
  • Comparative evaluation of financial statements using Trend Analysis, Comparative Statements and Common Size Statements for assessing profitability, liquidity and financial stability.
  • Problems on Trend Analysis , Comparative Statements and Common Size Statements with use of Annual Reports

Module III: Ratio Analysis and Interpretation

  • Ratio Analysis: Meaning, classification, Du Point Chart, advantages and limitations (Based on Vertical Form of Financial statements)
  • Balance Sheet Ratios : i) Current Ratio ii) Liquid Ratio iii) Stock Working Capital Ratio iv) Proprietary Ratio v) Debt Equity Ratio vi) Capital Gearing Ratio
  • Revenue Statement Ratio: i) Gross Profit Ratio ii) Expenses Ratio iii) Operating Ratio iv) Net Profit Ratio v) Net Operating Profit Ratio vi) Stock Turnover Ratio
  • Combined Ratio : i) Return on capital employed (Including Long Term Borrowings) ii) Return on proprietor's Fund (Shareholders Fund and Preference Capital) iii) Return on Equity Capital iv) Dividend Payout Ratio v) Debt Service Ratio vi) Debtors Turnover vii) Creditors Turnover (Practical Question on Ratio Analysis and Du Point Analysis)
