Everything needed for quick understanding and practical exam use.

Mumbai University splits most subject assessments into internal (continuous assessment) and external (university exam) marks. Understanding this split is crucial — it determines whether you pass, fail, or get the grade you want.

How the Internal + External Split Works

ProgramInternalExternalTotal
BCom / BA / BSc (CBCS)2575100
Engineering (newer syllabus)2080100
LLB (varies by subject)3070100
MCom / MA / MSc4060100

Passing Marks at Mumbai University

The general rule: 40% of total marks in each subject. For a 25+75=100 split, you need at least 40 marks combined.

Critical detail: some programs require minimum marks in each component separately. Engineering may require 40% in theory AND 40% in practical separately. Always check your course ordinance.

The Math: What Do You Need in the Exam?

Marks needed in exam = (Passing % x Total marks) - Your internal marks

Example: Internal 18/25. Total = 100. Passing = 40%. Marks needed = 40 - 18 = 22 out of 75 (29.3% of exam).

If internal is only 8/25: Marks needed = 40 - 8 = 32 out of 75 (42.7%). Harder, but doable.

Grace Marks Policy

Mumbai University may grant 1-5 grace marks to students who fail by a narrow margin. This is applied automatically during result processing. Do not plan your strategy around grace marks — aim for at least 5 marks above the minimum.

ATKT — What If You Fail?

ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) means you can move to the next semester while re-appearing for failed subjects. Typically allowed for 2-4 subjects. Your internal marks are carried forward — you only retake the external exam.

Use Our Free Calculator

Our Exam Marks Calculator instantly tells you the exact marks needed in the exam to pass, marks needed for each grade, and whether your target is achievable.

Exam Strategy Tips

  1. Maximize internal marks — 5 marks in internal = 5 fewer marks needed in the exam.
  2. Know your minimum — Calculate the bare minimum for each subject.
  3. Solve previous year papers — Mumbai University often repeats patterns. Check our question paper library.
  4. Do not ignore easy subjects — Students sometimes fail subjects they could have passed with minimal effort.
