Every Mumbai University student has asked this question at least once: "How many lectures can I skip and still be eligible for the exam?" The answer depends on simple math — but most students get it wrong until it’s too late.
The 75% Attendance Rule
Mumbai University mandates a minimum 75% attendance in each subject to be eligible for end-semester examinations. This applies across all faculties — Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, and Management.
The formula is straightforward:
Attendance % = (Lectures Attended / Total Lectures Conducted) x 100
Quick Math: How Many Can You Skip?
| Total Lectures | Must Attend (75%) | Can Skip |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 30 | 10 |
| 60 | 45 | 15 |
| 80 | 60 | 20 |
| 100 | 75 | 25 |
| 120 | 90 | 30 |
The general formula: Maximum lectures you can skip = Total Lectures x 0.25 (rounded down).
What Counts as a Lecture?
Each scheduled academic session counts separately:
- Regular lectures — 1 session each
- Practicals — tracked separately, often 2-3 hour blocks
- Tutorials — counted individually
- Lab sessions — separate attendance register
Most colleges track attendance for lectures, practicals, and tutorials independently. You need 75% in each component, not just overall.
What Happens If You Fall Below 75%?
- Warning notice — Your college issues a written warning when attendance drops below 65-70%
- Parents notified — Some colleges inform parents/guardians
- Detention — Below 75% at semester end means you cannot sit for the university exam in that subject
- Year loss — If detained in too many subjects, you may need to repeat the semester
Getting an Exemption
- Medical exemption — Submit a valid medical certificate to your college. Typically grants 10-15% relaxation.
- NCC/NSS duty — Participation in official NCC/NSS camps counts as attendance in some programs.
- University representation — Sports or cultural events at university level may be exempted.
Use Our Free Calculator
Instead of doing the math manually, use our free Attendance Calculator. Enter your total lectures, attended count, and it instantly tells you your current attendance percentage, how many more you can safely skip, and how many consecutive lectures you need to recover if below 75%.
Smart Attendance Strategy
- Front-load attendance — Attend everything in the first month. Build a buffer early.
- Track per-subject — One subject at 90% does not help if another is at 72%.
- Know your college schedule — Some colleges conduct extra lectures near the end.
- Medical certificates early — If you are sick, get the certificate immediately.
- Check attendance registers — Errors happen. Verify your count with the department monthly.
The bottom line: 75% sounds generous until you realize that skipping just one lecture per week in a subject with 4 weekly lectures puts you at exactly 75% — zero margin. Plan ahead.
