This is the Second Year Biomedical Rev 2019 C Scheme syllabus under REV-2019 'C' Scheme, in force from the academic year 2020-21. Syllabus for Medical Sensors (Abbreviated as MS)
Module 1
- Introduction: Generalized medical instrumentation system; General properties of input transducers; Static characteristics: Accuracy, precision, resolution, reproducibility, sensitivity, drift, hysteresis, linearity, input impedance and output impedance; Dynamic characteristics: Transfer functions, first order and second order systems, time delay; Design criteria.
Module 2
- Displacement, Motion, Force and Pressure Sensors and their Medical Applications: Displacement measurement: Potentiometers, strain gauges, bridge circuits, inductive sensor – L.V.D.T., capacitive sensors; Acceleration and force measurement: Piezoelectric sensor, load cell; Pressure sensing elements: Diaphragms, bellows, bourdon tubes.
Module 3
- Temperature Sensors and their Medical Applications: Temperature measurement: Thermistor, thermocouple, resistive temperature detector; IC-based temperature measurement; Radiation sensors: Thermal sensors, quantum sensors, and radiation thermometry.
Module 4: Biopotential electrodes: Electrode-electrolyte interface, half-cell potential, polarization, polarizable and non-polarizable electrodes, calomel electrode; Electrode circuit model, electrode-skin interface and motion artefacts; Body surface electrodes; Internal electrodes: Needle and wire electrodes (different types); Microelectrodes: Metal and supported metal micropipette (metal filled glass and glass micropipette)

Module 5: Chemical Sensors and their Medical Applications: Blood gas and acid- base physiology; pH, Pco2, Po2 electrodes; ISFETs; Transcutaneous arterial O2 and CO2 tension monitoring.
- Fiber optic Sensors and their Medical Applications : Principle of fiber optics; Fiber optic sensor types - Temperature, chemical, and pressure.
Module 6
- Biosensors: Types of biosensors - electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, piezoelectric biosensors; Biorecognition elements and their immobilization techniques; Medical applications of biosensors.
