Syllabus for French Literature of the XXth century
Description of the course
This course explores major literary trends and themes in 20th-century French literature through selected works by Jean Giono and Vercors. Including but not limited to humanism, resistance, ecological thought, and narrative form, the course examines how literature responds to crisis, war, and the modern human condition.
Course objectives
- 1. To introduce students to key literary and historical contexts of 20th- century France.
- 2. To explore themes of resistance, silence, and regeneration in Giono and Vercors.
- 3. To develop interpretive and analytical skills through close reading of selected texts.
- 4. To examine how literature reflects and shapes moral and philosophical responses to conflict and nature.
Course outcomes
- CO 1 To understand the interrelation between literature, culture and society.
- CO 2 To apply critical theories and concepts to understand a literary piece.
- CO 3 To acquire writing skills in simple literary analysis and criticism.
- CO 4 To study Réalisme as a literary movement.
