Description of the course

This course examines major themes and literary developments in 19th-century French literature, centered on selected works by Honoré de Balzac. Including but not limited to realism, social ambition, and the fantastic, the course invites critical reflection on literature’s role in depicting and shaping modern society.

Course objectives

• 1. To introduce students to key literary movements of 19th-century France, particularly realism and the fantastic.
• 2. To examine the socio-political and philosophical contexts influencing Balzac’s writing.
• 3. To develop students’ ability to read, interpret, and discuss complex literary texts in translation or original French.
• 4. To foster analytical thinking through close reading of Père Goriot/La Peau de chagrin..
