About this role
PhonePe runs one of the largest payments systems in India, and this SRE seat is on its private cloud rather than a public cloud console. That distinction is the whole character of the job. The requirement is 4+ years of Linux and Unix administration, real computer networking including IP, iptables and IPsec, MySQL with MariaDB and Percona as a plus, scripting in Perl, Python or Golang, configuration management with SaltStack, and hands on private cloud experience. Desirable extras name KVM and QEMU for running cloud services on Linux, Aerospike, Galera cluster operations and data centre work. So this is systems engineering in PhonePe's own data centres, a genuinely different skill set from cloud platform work and one that is getting harder to find. Bangalore, and on call rotation is part of it.
Who this is for
Required by the posting: 4+ years in Linux/Unix administration with extensive field experience. Computer networking proficiency and working knowledge. Experience with a wide variety of open source technologies and tools with a strong emphasis on cloud services. Ability to implement best practices and IT operations to maintain an always up, always available service. Active participation in the on call rotation schedule. Effective English communication. A strong background in Linux networking including IP, iptables and IPsec. Effective work with MySQL databases, with MariaDB and Percona experience a plus. Coding and scripting skills, with a preference for Perl, Python or Golang. Experience with automation and configuration management using tools like SaltStack. Hands on experience with private cloud environments.
Desirable skills: experience implementing cloud services on Linux using KVM and QEMU; familiarity with container orchestration; knowledge of NoSQL databases, especially Aerospike; proficiency in Perl and Golang; understanding of Galera cluster operations; and experience with data centre related activities.
The real day to day: maintaining the reliability and performance of large scale fintech infrastructure, with the posting framing the goal as keeping services always up and always available, and the technology mix pointing squarely at private cloud systems engineering rather than managed cloud services.

If you have run physical or virtualised infrastructure in a data centre, this is a rarer and more durable skill set than it gets credit for, and PhonePe operates it at a scale few Indian employers can offer.
