Preamble for Diploma Course in the Bhagavadgita:
Bhagavadgita is the name that has become synonymous with Indian
Culture. Being one of the Prasthanatrayi , this composition is a treasure
house of eternal knowledge. This course has been designed with the aim of
imparting in depth knowledge about the contents of Bhagavadgita.
The following aspects will also be explored -
1. Spiritual, Philosophical, Psychologica l, Social and Practical
perspectives of Bhagavadgita
2. Literature on Bhagavadgita
3. Application of the text in the present times

New ordinances 6785 & 6786 relating to the
Diploma Course in the Bhagavadgita.
1. Necessity for starting the course: Sanskrit Department of the University of Mumbai in
its plan for expansion intends to start a One Year Diploma Course in the
Bhagavadgeeta. The Bhagavadgeeta has been a guiding light for its reader for more
than two mill ennia. As it is one among the Prasthanatraya, a person to be known as an
Acharya needs to write a commentary on it. Many sects practicing the Sanatana
dharma encourage such type of exegetical exercises. During the freedom struggle,
Bhagavadgeeta was one of the leading texts to guide freedom fighters to theorize the
Philosophy of the freedom movement. LokmanyaTilak, Mahatma Gandhi,
AcharyaVinobaBhavecommented and lectured on the Bhagavadgeeta. As this year is
known as the AzadeekaAmritMahotsav, the Depar ment wants to start a One Year
Diploma Course on the Bhagavadgeeta commemorating this historical event. In this
course, the Department will undertake the study of the Bhagavadgeeta within the
precincts of a strict academic framework
2. Whether the UGC has re commended the course: Yes. The New Education Policy opines
that Sanskrit Departments to start courses which will be helpful to create an
atmosphere of peace and harmony in the society.
3. Whether all the courses have commenced from the academic year 2019 -2020 (2022 -23):
Yes, we intend to start the DiplomaProgramme in the academic year 2022 -23.
4. The courses started by the University are self -financed, whether adequate number of
eligible permanent facultiesis available: The fees are as per University rule. The existing
faculty members comprising of 6 full time teaching faculty and qualified visiting faculty
will conduct the course
5. To give details regarding the duration of the Course and is it possible to compress the
course: The Diploma Course is a one year Course conducted once a week for three
hours. It cannot be compressed
6. The intake capacity of each course and no. of admission s given in the current academic
year: The intake capacity is 60 students. No admissions have been given as the course
will commence from the academic year 2022 -23.
7. Opportunities of Employability / Employment available after undertaking these
courses: Stu dents can work as teachers, researchers, motivational speaker and writers.
